Started tinkering a little in Adobe illustrator. In the past, I always used Flash for my vector work, but a recent contract forced me to use Illustrator. There's definitely a lot that Illustrator does compared to Flash, but on the other hand, I find it makes certain tasks more complicated. I'm assuming I just haven't gotten used to it yet.

Plasmites is a project I've had in mind for quite some time, but never got around to it. Spadoid had always been an integral part of the Plasmites, but I liked him a lot so I included him as my overall mascot as well as in Korean Comics. Plasmites is a sort of prototype brand of mine.

This year, instead of a Christmas piece, I made a New Year's piece, which was actually commissioned by my girlfriend to send out as a postcard to her family.

2012 is the year of the dragon. It's interesting to note that although Lunar New Year isn't until January 23rd, the Japanese celebrate the New Year's on January 1st.

I was trying to get some fanart done for the Montreal Mini Comicon and I've always been a fan of Starcraft...

On another note, I finally figured out what the problem was with many of my images displaying over-saturated colors when viewed with Firefox and Chrome. Apparenlty they can't handle the colors of jpegs when I choose "original size" from the embed link in Picasa. Now I just upload PNGs.

Please let me know if you notice any other display issues.

Сою́з (Soyuz) Longboard

The "Soyuz" is a commissioned design I made this summer for Restless. It was recently released and can be purchased at many fine board shops in the Montreal area and beyond, or you can order directly from their website (though I'm not sure if it's specifically listed their yet).

The red part of the board is actually the wood of the deck itself stained red.

The other board is one of my older designs named "Telsa Bunny" (also available for purchase). I only included it in this post because I don't think I had ever shown a picture of the deck itself.

I was asked to create a design with the Soyuz theme in mind. I took inspiration from some old Soviet space program art that I found online.

I wouldn't say High Five Ghost is my favorite character, but I certainly like his design and premise. Thought it'd be fun to combine him with Pac-Man.

The Canadian federal elections are coming up soon, and I got this idea for some minimalist t-shirts for each party. Each of the leaders seem to have one very distinctive feature on their faces, usually but not always some form of facial hair. Not sure if I'll get any printed, maybe if there's any demand. They were just fun to design really.

I'm not very politically-minded, however I do think it's important to vote regardless. During the last election I was still at Sheridan studying animation and many people "were too busy" with their school work to bother to go vote, which is totally bogus. Exercise your rights, yo.

Just typing this is killing me. I gotta see a specialist.

I've finally gotten around to seriously studying the Korean language, which is a nice break from my art-related pursuits. However, it occurred to me last week that I may be able to merge both passions into one.

I've always found that restrictions allow for more creativity. In this case, my severe lack of Korean fluency poses an interesting challenge in coming up with entertaining comics strips.

The idea is that if I continue the comics over a long period of time, the text will improve along with my grasp of the language, making it a sort of journal of my progress.

Hopefully I won't insult an entire culture in the process.

I think I'm actually glad that I won for Best Music Video rather than Best Animated Film, though it is nice to have gotten the nomination for it. TS also got a nomination for Best Quebec Film.

Spillz' Guide to 4th Year

I wanted to make this post in early September, but I never got around to it. The following is a a bunch of notes I made near the end of my 4th year at Sheridan during the production of THUNDERSTRIKE. I've compiled them into a guide for your viewing pleasure. I hope this will help out current 4th year students, as well as the ones after that. I like to believe that many of these concepts can be applied to any kind of independent film production, but they are certainly catered to the way things were and probably still are at Sheridan.

I don't consider myself to have been a model student, nor to have made a phenomenal film, however I still finished it in full color with proper clean-up, and have had some moderate success with it in the festival circuit. I also got work right out of school, whether that was because i followed these guidelines is a matter of debate. HOWEVER, many successful Sheridan graduates had completely different work methods and were still very successful. So please take it or leave.

Here we go:

1- Start EARLY, Have story beats and rough designs by the beginning of September at least.

2- DON'T waste time constantly talking about what you're going to do with your film, just do it already.

3- Try to work within a semi-rigid schedule, like 9 to 5 or 10 to 6. Treat it like your job, not like school you can just blow off.

4- AVOID the internet and other intense distractions, working at school can help with this. Unfortunately, you'll still get people with laptops blaring YouTube cat videos and cackling incessantly. Don't be shy to kindly ask them to keep it down if it's excessive.

5 - Eat well and sleep well. Your waking hours won't be nearly as effective otherwise. Regular exercise helps too. Try saving time by playing less games, rather than by buying all your meals at Rabba's and Harvey's.

6- Make your own deadlines. Work within the Milestones, but try to be ahead of them.

7- NEVER compromise the look of your film to save time. Plan properly and do your best to avoid this temptation. A sketchy clean-up style is fine if it goes with your Art Direction and Story, but don't just decide to do it last minute because you think it's faster and hate clean-up.

8 - Take breaks and time off, but BEWARE of slacking off.

9 - Do elective class work when breaking from your film.

10- Test out your full pipeline early to help plan your production schedule.

11- Keep your film as short as possible. You'll thank yourself later.

12- Vary your workload. If you're stumped and fed up with animating, paint a few backgrounds to switch things up a little.

13- Avoid drastic changes to your story in the middle of production. You may not find a gag funny anymore 4 months in, but try to remember what it was like initially. Show your film to fresh eyes if need be.

14- Take advantage of the teachers and technicians. Don't be shy to get comments and feedback from them, HOWEVER, beware of asking too many people for feedback, it may cause more doubt and confusion than anything else. Only ask for feedback when you're stumped or uncertain about something, and be sure to get it from people with opinions that you personally value.

15- Pick a story and theme that you like. Don't make a film because you think it's what prospective employers want to see. Chances are you're already qualified enough for a job, the film is just a bonus. So be sure to do something you're passionate about.

16- Have fun. 4th year is only as difficult as you make it out to be.

Young Cuts Film Festival

My short film THUNDERSTRIKE was officially selected for the 2010 Young Cuts Film Festival. Not only that, but it was also selected for the top 10, Best-Of competition.

Pretty exciting, especially since thus far, it's the only festival I've been able to get into!

For those of you in Montreal, the festival will be held on September 24th & 25th @ Cinemas du Parc.

Merure 3, the comic collective I'm occasionally a part of, is on it's way!

Merure 3 is a collection of 23 montreal-based artists who each contributed a 3 page comic of their own design. Nearly all of the comics lack any kind of text, so anybody can enjoy them, no matter where they're from! My good friend Cheyenne from Sheridan is part of the line up, as well as a host other very talented individuals, like my personal fave, Boum!

The official launch will be October 22nd @ Restaurant Le Grillon in sunny Montreal! If you can't make it, you'll be able to order your copies online @ Ika & EsSe's trinket shop Drownspire. Pricing is to be announced, but it will likely be the same as previous Machine Machine books, so like $20.

Finished the first week of my last year at Sheridan.

I think it's safe to assume I wont be able to make many posts while I'm in production on my senior film. I've started a production blog for the film which I'l be frequently updating, but I am keeping it invite only. If everyone had access to the film's step-by-step production, then who will I get to pleasantly surprise once it's done?

It should be noted, however that I'll periodically release some artwork from the film on this blog as well.

Bivouac Urbain

Last weekend I participated in a video game making competition called "Bivouac Urbain". It was a pretty neat experience. The whole thing was set up outside in a park with included food, drinks and even a masseuse (I know what you're thinking and no, there were no happy endings of that sort)! There were also some bands performing on stage nearby. I was even featured on the local news!

After a general theme was announced, each team had 48 hours to create a game prototype. Unfortunately, our team of 5 was unable to complete the game in time. The programmers didnt have much experience in Action Script, so although we had all the art done, none of it functioned very well as a game.

The theme was antithesis. We chose to do Black & White VS Color. As a white glove, your character needs to jump from planet to planet and "infect" them with B&W paint while avoiding brushes that try to color you. Since white gloves on cartoon characters in the 30's was pretty standard, it seemed natural to have a white glove represent the forces of B&W. I thought it was neat to play as the conservative character who resists change and innovation.

Long time no post, I know.

I've been interning as a 3D animator over at Ubisoft Quebec city. It's a pretty sweet gig really, since it's a huge company, you get lots of great perks like popsicles, popcorn and beer. Not to mention discounts on games and the ability to borrow books on animation or games or movies from the studio's library. I've learnt how to use 3D Studio Max, as well as how to function within a game pipeline. Naturally, I can't really mention what I'm working on, but it's shaping up to be a pretty cool title.

I must say though, working 40 hours a week somehow seems more time-consuming then whatever ridiculous hours I put in at school. Just seems like the days aren't long enough to work, do your own work and play. I wonder how people manage with children.

I've got some new junk to post up soon.

Well it's all over, the school year that is, and the fruit of this year's labor is The Auction, a short film a dozen of us students made:

Of course, it won't be available online for a little while, so you'll have to catch it at a Sheridan screening or hopefully some upcoming film festivals.

I've learned that It's extremely difficult to coordinate a team of twelve inexperienced completely different minded people to produce a short film, and given those circumstances, I think we did all right.

Dédé à travers les brumes

It almost slipped my mind due to my Ontario setting that the film I worked on as an assistant animator last spring is finally out in theaters. I doubt it's playing in these parts, but if you're in Quebec and haven't heard of it, definitely check it out.

So yeah, if you're not in the know, it's about the true story of Dédé Fortin, the leader of the 90's band "Les Colocs" which was culturally significant to the modern history of Quebeckers. Though the budget pales in comparison to your typical Hollywood fare, it certainly matches them in production quality. WAY beyond most Canadian films I've seen.

Pardon my bias, but there are some awesome little animated sequences slipped in here and there, despite it mostly being live action. Most of the animated sequences follow the exploits of a black cat name Belzebuth! There's also an awesome Stop-Mo sequence done by former Aardman animator Virpi Kettu.

...This time the creature is like a different variant the same creatures from my last post. These ones are taller, primitive, nomadic tribals who live in alien savannah and spend most of their time foraging for delicious Cocoon fruit. They must be very cautious of dangerous predators.

Here are some character and costume concept doodles for a short comic I'm working on:

They're like a race of goat/rabbit-like creatures. Haven't really come up with a name for them yet, but I will be animating a taller version of one of the creatures for an unrelated school project.

The working title of the comic is "It's Not You".

Finally got a copy of the flyer for the commish I did a few weeks ago. The client went with the Fast Food flavor. The design and pretty much everything but the character were all done by the client.

Other than that, I've been working at C.O.R.E. Toons for the past three weeks (hence the lack of posts, really busy), just finished my contract. It was my first professional Flash gig, and I must say it was kind of nerve racking at first since so much was expected of me, but I pulled through in the end. Got to meet some great people and learned a lot too! Unfortunately it'll be a little while until I can post some examples of the work I did there.

Start school in about a week, pretty excited, really. It'll be nice to get back to hand drawn animation.

Thinking Out Loud (or How Many Times I Can Say "Like" in One Post)

Haven't made a texty post in a while...

I just watched Pixar's Up and Disney's Princess & the Frog teasers.

I also read a lot of comments people had about them and the big animation studios in general. Anyway it's getting me to think out loud here, hence the title.

Generally speaking, I like Pixar and I like Disney. I like original euro stuff like Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis and Jamie Hewlett's Gorillaz videos. I like Studio Ghibli and I like Studio 4C. I also like typical American Indy movies like Garden State, Saved!, Juno and Rocket Science. I like Genndy Tartakovsky's ultra designy toons and I like John K's wacked-out super toons and I like Jennifer Pertsch and Tom McGillis' bubblegum pop show 6Teen. Though I'm never sure I'm quite grasping his work, I do like David Lynch films. and I like Christopher Nolan's work, Richard Linklater's, Stanley Kubrick's, Guillermo Del Toro's, Tim Burton's, Alfonso Cuarón's, Danny Boyle's and a golf course full of other directors, artists and studios.

Everybody has different opinions and different tastes, and although I do dislike certain things (what immediately comes to mind now is films and TV series that rely entirely on pop culture references), I feel like I like a lot of work that almost contradict each other. It's like, most of the people that like a certain kind of movie, won't like another. But I most often do. I'm pretty sure I understand WHY I like all these things, so I'm not like children who usually seem to just blurt out that they like everything without really thinking about it or knowing why.

As far as movies go, how many people like The Fountain, Spider-Man, The Lost World and Before Sunrise on approximately the same level (a likeable level)?

Does anyone else get this feeling?

I spoke mostly about movies here, but this goes for drawing/painting looks as well. I like everything dammit! Like, WHAT DO I DO?!

In light of all recent super-themed films, I thought it might be a good time to bring back out my superhero team; Nitro Blitz, Featuring the brilliant Seraphim, the overconfident Ecstasy, the homeless Solarus and the luscious BloodStar.

I hesitated a lot with how I was going to approach this one. I settled with cell shading, though I originally wanted to give it a really painterly look. Problem is my comp seems to be having trouble managing Photoshop these days so the brush strokes of my tablet always have huge delays that kind of kill the feeling of painting. OH well.

Bonzai Films

After a relaxing week in Miami, I'm now busy in the exiting world of freelancing. I got a one month contract deal as an assistant animator with the up and coming Bonzai Films studio in Montreal. I must say it's quite an exiting project to work on, especially compared to the digital cut-out animation i was doing last summer. Though I can't say much, I can say it's a feature film and I'm animating traditionally. Nuts to all who say there's only Flash and 3D jobs out there! The release is early next year... so everything else will have to remain secret until then.

It's the last few weeks of the school semester, so things are getting pretty busy. This may very well be my last post before it's over. Sooooooooo.... here are a few pen & marker doodles from my new sketchbook.

I've also been trying hard to secure some employment for the summer. I've been applying at a bunch of smaller studios in Montreal. So far nothing certain, but I'm making valuable contacts. wish me luck.

Haven't work with Maya in a couple of years, and I don't really remember anything i learnt way back then anyway.

So we have a 3D modeling class now, and I figured I might as well start with the basics.... and by basics I mean retro robots bent on destruction.

On another note, I just completed my latest animation, despite a "gunman's" best efforts to thwart my work. I'll be psoting it soon, so stay tuned, kids.

For what feels like quite a while now ive been having this sort of creative block. Seems like all the work ive been doing is purely for the sake of passing my classes. Whenever i open my sketchbook to draw, my mind goes blank. Therefore, i am currently in the process of regaining my passion for drawing for the sake of drawing. I dont think ive even made a finished illustration since the summer.

Anywho, I figured i should start out with something familiar, so i finally decided to continue my LSD Stargirl's band idea.

Sketchy Highlights

Well im back in school for my 4th semester. With 3 hours less of class than last semester, im expecting things to go pretty smoothly. The animation projects seem to be all about lip synching and acting, which is quite exciting, really.

Seems like the more you go, the more you get tempted by just wanting to quit school and work in the industry. Just last week, i was told by some working animator friends in montreal that they needed animators for a big feature project they were working on, which happened to be an awesome, but that i naturally had to turn down. But then i reminded myself that once i start working, ill be doing that for most of my life, so i might as well stay in school for a while and enjoy the ride.

Anyway, figured since i didnt have much accomplished here yet, id just post a few selections from my fall sketchbook...

Tonight ill finally get to see Persepolis, ill be really disapointed if it doesn't live up to expectations...
